Iran Eyes Russian Gas Deliveries via Azerbaijan
On August 25, Kazem Jalali, the Ambassador of Iran to Russia, stated that Iran hopes to begin receiving Russian gas deliveries via Azerbaijan in the near future. Jalali emphasized that "we are currently negotiating with Gazprom; almost all issues have already been resolved. But we need to find a common language regarding the price. If this issue is also resolved, then everything will be launched," while answering a question about the timeline for the deliveries.
Notably, this development follows a series of agreements between Russia and Iran, including a 2025 strategic partnership treaty encompassing energy cooperation. The gas transit route through Azerbaijan is seen as a practical solution, circumventing the complexities of a subsea pipeline across the Caspian Sea, which faces environmental and legal challenges. The proposed pipeline would connect Russian gas supplies to Iran's northern provinces, which have experienced recurring shortages, especially during winter months.
