Azerbaijan Warns of Russian Disinformation Campaign Targeting Country
On September 2, the Azerbaijani Parliament Commission on Foreign Interference and Hybrid Threats stated that a large-scale disinformation campaign against Azerbaijan had been launched from the Russian Federation. The commission noted that the campaign began immediately after Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev’s interview with Saudi Arabia’s Al Arabiya TV channel aired on August 27. "Monitoring revealed that the President's historically substantiated response to a question about the Zangezur Corridor was deliberately taken out of context, distorted, and presented in a falsified form to Russian audiences," the statement said.
According to the commission, the campaign aims to fuel anti-Azerbaijani sentiment in Russian society and is conducted through television channels, news websites, social media platforms, and influential radical individuals. Banned or restricted platforms in Russia, such as Facebook, Instagram, and X, are reportedly being used, alongside fake social media accounts and bots created under the names of foreign nationals. Another tactic involves targeted advertisements within Azerbaijan’s social media space containing threats against the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"These repugnant campaigns have no impact on public opinion in Azerbaijan. Such actions only serve to mislead Russian society with false narratives and to provoke unnecessary hostility toward neighboring states," the commission emphasized. It also highlighted the role of pro-war "Z-bloggers" in spreading anti-Azerbaijani sentiment and stated that the commission, together with relevant state bodies, is closely monitoring these actions and will continue implementing preventive measures.
