Armenia Detains Opposition Members on Terrorism Charges as Russia Reportedly Threatens Economic Sanctions
On July 10, the Armenian Investigation Committee announced the detention of seven additional individuals suspected of terrorism. The Committee stated that these individuals were arrested on charges of plotting a terrorist act and the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. Local media specified that all those detained were members of the opposition Dashnaktsutyun party.
Meanwhile, Gurgen Arsenyan, the Armenian Ambassador to Russia, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry on July 7, where he was reportedly warned of potential economic sanctions against Yerevan. During the meeting, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin conveyed Moscow’s threat to implement such measures should Armenia agree to the West’s reported demand to block Russian state television channels from the country’s public multiplex.
Diplomatic sources noted that the conversation between Galuzin and Arsenyan was tense. "The ambassador was directly told that they know what the Armenian authorities have planned and how they are stirring up anti-Russian sentiments," the sources stated.
